PORTUGAL 2025

Our first 2025 Clinical Conference will be held in the beautiful city of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal located at the estuary of the Tagus River. Lisbon is known for its historic ruins, old pastel-coloured buildings, elaborately detailed ceramic tiles, fado music, winding old town, trams & pasteis de nata (Portugese tarts)

You'll visit the old quarter of Alfama (the oldest district) with an Arabian influence of narrow cobbled streets & colourful houses. FRI   09

Today's full day tour is to the northwest. Our first stop will be the Royal Palace of Queluz, formerly the Summer Residence of the Portuguese Royal Family, resembling the Palace of Versailles in France. Its gardens are a fine example of the 18th century French style. We continue to the ancient town of Sintra where well known English poets & writers lived in the 18th & 19th centuries. We'll visit the white National Palace of Sintra in existence since 1154, distinguished by its conical twin kitchen chimneys with a mixture of architectural styles & superb 15th & 16th century hand painted wall tiles in the chapel & main halls. The pretty town of Sintra has coloured buildings, narrow roads, climbing flowers & plants trailing from mossy walls & balconies & you'll have free time for lunch, shopping & a stroll around this quaint town. From Sintra, we'll drive across the mountains to the westernmost point of Continental Europe - Cabo da Roca (Cape of the Rock) - where we'll make a brief stop before continuing along the coastal road back to Lisbon   (B)

SAT  10

After morning conference sessions & lunch, our afternoon tour is to Palmela & Azeitao. We travel south over the 25th April Bridge & stop in Palmela to visit the old castle, which is now a pousada. It stands 240 metres above sea level at the top of the Serra de Arrabida hills with views over the surrounding countryside & the Tagus & Sado estuaries. There'll also be a short visit to a tile workshop to learn about the production of the Portugese decorative tiles. We continue onto the little town of Azeitão, to visit a typical wine cellar & taste the famous Moscatel wine   (B/L)

This evening you may like to join our optional dinner of Portugese specialities, in what remains of a Renaissance building, formerly the home of the Counts of Linhares, one of Portugal's noble families. The meal will be accompanied by Fado, a form of music characterized by mournful tunes & lyrics dating back to the 1820's, accompanied by Portugese guitars
