                                                                          B = Breakfast L = Lunch D = Dinner

Kyoto - once the capital of Japan - is a city on the island of Honshu. It's famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines & traditional wooden houses. It’s also known for formal traditions such as kaiseki dining & geisha. One of it's main drawcards are the cherry blossoms (sakura) that flower in spring & gives the best time to see geisha & maikos on the street. Join us at this special time of year in Japan!

SUN   26         Depart Australia this evening & arrive into Osaka the following morning

MON  27          Upon arrival at Osaka Itami airport, we'll travel to the Arashiyama district of Kyoto for some sightseeing. You'll experience a Rickshaw ride through the lovely Bamboo Forest before lunch, then a photo stop at the beautiful Golden Pavilion, a famous structure dating from the Muromachi Period (1336-1573) & listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. We'll transfer to our hotel in Kyoto, our home for the next 5 nights. Meet fellow delegates this evening at our welcome dinner                                                                                                                                         LD

TUE   28          Morning conference sessions before sightseeing in pretty Kyoto. We'll stroll along the Philosopher's Path to view the beautiful light pink cherry blossoms that overhang the small canal, before wandering down the traditional narrow pedestrian streets of Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka with their souvenirs, snack shops & teahouses that retain the flavour of old Kyoto & have been designated areas of important traditional architecture by the Japanese government. You'll also see the well-known Yasaka Pagoda before we return to the hotel or alternatively, join our optional activity to watch a traditional performing arts show by the Geiki & Maiko dancers in traditional ornate dress at the famous Gion Corner theatre          BL

WED   29          Morning conference sessions then a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Nijo Castle, built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of the 1st Shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1867). The wide moat, massive stone walls & heavy yet elaborate gates are still impressive. We continue onto Fushimi Inari Shrine with it's 1,000 Torii Gates - dedicated to the god of rice & sake in the 8th century - and where the Hollywood movie “Memoirs of Geisha” was filmed. You'll be given free time to wander along the paths through the bright red gates & look at the main shrine                        BL

THU   30          Today is sure to be a highlight as we travel by bullet train to Hiroshima. The A-Bomb Dome in Hiroshima is a symbol of massive destruction but also a powerful beacon of peace. It’s significance has been recognized by UNESCO, which added it to the World Heritage list. The first city ever attacked by Atomic bomb, Hiroshima hosts the Peace Memorial Park representing wishes for everlasting peace. We'll visit the sights in the park including the museum. Another World Heritage site is Miyajima - a small island in the Inland Sea - the home of the Itsukushima Shrine & the famous "floating" torii gate. The shrine was established in 593 but the present torii dates from 1875. It rises 16 metres above the sea & its columns are 10 metres in circumference                                                                                                                                                        BD

FRI   31          Morning conference sessions & lunch then it's a free afternoon to discover more of Kyoto - wander through Nishiki Market (known as Kyoto's pantry to the locals), the best traditional food market & shopping; view gardens; visit Nanzen-ji Temple & its Aqueduct; go to the top of the 131 metre tall Kyoto Tower for a panoramic view over the city or wander the old streets. Tonight is our gala dinner                      BLD
