Post Conference Tour - Corsica & Sardinia

FRI   17       Travelling south this morning, we stop in Turin for a tour of the former & first capital of Italy, with                      it's beautiful piazzas, elegant palaces & magnificent churches. We visit the 525ft high Mole                                  Antonelliana, built in 1889 & take the elevator to the observation platform at the top to admire the                      stunning view of Turin & the surrounding countryside, backed by the Alps. Torino is also the                                birthplace of solid chocolate & the chocolate capitol of Italy. At the end of the tour, you can                                experience this old handmade tradition at a café to try the local biscuits & chocolates. After lunch,                      we'll continue onto Savona port to take an overnight ferry to Northern Corsica                         BL   


SAT  18       This morning we disembark in Bastia & after breakfast, we’ll take a short walk around the old town,                    where you’ll see the 14th century Governor's Palace, church of Sainte Marie de l'Assomption & small                    laneways. We depart for Ajaccio on the west coast of this French island & stop in Corte along the                        way for lunch & a quick look at the town, their citadel sits dramatically on top of a rocky outcrop                          above the town. On arrival in Ajaccio, we'll do a walking tour. Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napolean                      Bonaparte & you'll see his statue & the town hall in Place Foch. You'll also see the Cathedral, old                          harbour, the imperial chapel of the Bonaparte family                                                              BL


SUN  19    First today, you’ll visit the birth house of Napoleon, which is now a museum then some free time                        before lunch on the Port. We start our journey south & stop at the megalithic site of Filitosa, one of                      the most mysterious cultural sites of the Mediterranean & one of the most beautiful Prehistoric art                      collections in Europe. It's an outdoor museum providing an overview of 8,000 years of human                            history. We continue onto Bonifacio, situated on the southern tip of Corsica                               BD


MON  20      Founded in 828, Bonifacio is a breathtaking medieval city perched on clifftops & the oldest town in                      Corsica. You’ll discover this delight on our morning walking tour. You'll see the harbour before we                        walk up through the Citadel gate to the old town on the clifftop to see Church Sainte Marie Majeure                    which was built in the 12-13th century, the church Saint Jean Baptist, the medieval laneways, the                      marine cemetery & fabulous views from the cliffs looking over to Sardinia. This afternoon is at                            leisure so you can wander this delightful town, take the King of Aragon Staircase of 187 steps cut                        into the cliffside down to the sea, walk the ramparts of Bastion de l'Etenhard & see it's memorial &                      underground rooms or walk up to the cliffs opposite the old town                                             B


TUE   21      We cross the Strait of Bonifacio this morning & arrive in Sardinia, Italy. We drive to Alghero on the                      west coast for lunch, then do a walking tour of the city nicknamed ‘Barcelonetta’. You’ll walk along                      the Ramblas to the port to see the city walls, towers & bastions, visit Civic Square, the Gothic                            Cathedral of Santa Maria, the church of San Francesco & Piazza Sulis. Free time after the tour &                          evening, gives you the chance to wander the cobble-stoned streets of the old town                  BL 


WED  22     You’ll view the Sardinian countryside this morning as we drive south to visit the Nora archaeological                   park before lunch in Pula. On arrival we’ll have lunch, then tour this extraordinary example of a city                     of Punic & Roman times. The sunken city is one of the most important archaeological sites on the                       island & you’ll see beautiful mosaics, temples, patrician villas, cobbled streets, the baths & the                           famous theatre. We continue onto Cagliari                                                                             BL


THU  23      On our morning walking tour, you’ll see the fortified quarter of the Castello that overlooks the city,                      the Medieval rampart of St Remy, the Elephant & St Pancras Towers & Piazza Palazzo, home of St                        Mary’s Cathedral & Palazzo Regio. Then you can spend the afternoon exploring the rest of the old                        town                                                                                                                                   BD   


FRI   24       Time to bid farewell to the Mediterranean islands & fly home via Rome                                      B
