Faroe Islands Post Conference Tour

Adrift in the North Atlantic Sea, a different world lingers, a place like no other on earth. An idyllic escape & unfathomable beauty peacefully set among lush green valleys, imposing basalt cliffs, grand treeless moorlands & waterfalls plunging directly into the ocean. The 18 jagged volcanic islands which make up the Faroes, resemble a handful of rocks scattered haphazardly in the deep ocean. Home to mountains of myth, hobbit-like turf-roofed houses & grazing shaggy sheep, these islands make up the perfect playground for the senses

We arrive into the Faroes on the island of Vagar where we'll start our sightseeing. You'll enjoy an easy hike to the waterfall of Bosdalafossur running 30m from Lake Leitisvatn - the largest lake in the Faroes - into the Atlantic Ocean. From here you can walk up to the viewpoint of Trælanípan, a high cliff that goes 142m upwards from the ocean & was used as a slave cliff in the old days. From Traelanípan you can see the southernmost part of Streymoy, Hestur, Koltur, Sandoy, Skuvoy & Suduroy. After this scenic walk, we'll drive south to Torshavn where we'll spend the next 5 nights   (BLD)

Monday 16

Our full day tour takes us to the westernmost island of Mykines by ferry, known for its magnificent rich bird life - gannets, cormorants, razorbills, fulmars, storm petrels, kittiwakes & the stars of the island, hundreds of puffins gallivanting around & nestling in burrows on the clifftops. You’ll view Tindhomlur & Drangarnir up close along the way. Upon arrival on the island, we'll hike to Mykines Islet with views of rolling hills, precipitous cliffs & tremendous views of the ocean & other islands. This is a route that takes you close to the cliff edge & crosses a 50m high footbridge over the Atlantic Ocean connecting Mykines Island to the islet. It is especially the puffins & the large gannet colony that attracts, but you may also get lucky & see some seals close to shore or whales swimming by. We take the ferry back to Sorvágur & drive back to our hotel for an evening at leisure   (BL)

Tuesday 17

This morning you'll be guided on a walking tour through lanes & narrow passagesways of the old part of Tórshavn (the world's smallest capital city) to view the world’s oldest parliament Tinganes, onto Fort Skansin, then to the charming area around the marina where you will find several cafes, fashion & craft shops. The rest of the morning is free to explore Torshavn on your own - visit a museum, shop or wander the town. We drive to Kirkjubour mid-afternoon, the southernmost village on Streymoy Island & notable as the historical & cultural hub for Faroese history. You'll see the ruins of St Magnus Cathedral, begun around 1300 but never completed & is the largest medieval building in the islands; the charming white St Olav's Church dating from the 12th century & still in use today & Kirkjuoargardur, one of - if not the oldest - inhabited wooden houses in the world. Dating back to the 11th century, it was initially used as the episcopal residence & seminary of the Diocese of the Faroe Islands. The current occupants have been there since 1550 & are the 17th generation! A family member will host us for coffee & cake in the farmhouse, one of the oldest continuously inhabited wooden buildings in Europe. We travel onto Velbastadur to enjoy an authentic & intimate dinner experience at farmer's Anna & Oli's home. In addition to being served delicious homemade Faroese cuisine, you'll also hear interesting stories from the farm & their life in the Faroe Islands. Anna and Oli’s skills in the kitchen go beyond an ordinary meal & they'll serve food from the season   (BD)

Wednesday 18

Today we visit Northern Eysturoy via an undersea tunnel emerging in the town of Klaksvík, surrounded by towering mountains. You'll visit the magnificent Christian's Church of contemporary design featuring hand-hewn basalt & a spacious interior, dominated by an impressive fresco of the Great Banquet depicted in Luke 14 that is over 100 years old & a full-size votive boat secured to the ceiling. We continue to Vidoy which offers dramatic landscapes & here lies the most northern village in the Faroe Islands, Vidareidi. We'll also visit the tiny village of Kunoy with it's beautiful view of the island of Kalsoy. Passing the highest mountains in the Faroes, you'll descend to the secluded village of Gjógv to explore its hidden marvel, a chasm cut deep into the basalt by the relentless sea. Take the time to enjoy a walk along the gorge before we join a Faroese cultural evening in the village with local cuisine & enjoy some Faroese music & chain dancing   (BLD)

Thursday 19 June
Today we follow the road over the mountain to the village of Vestmanna on Streymoy Island where you'll take a boat through Vestmanna Sound to the bird cliffs, the steep cliffs that are home to thousands of seabirds, including puffins, fulmars, guillemots & kittewakes. From the town’s harbour, we'll navigate the narrow straits & grottoes, into caves & cruise close to the almost 700 metre high vertical cliffs. After the cruise, lunch will be a home hospitality meal with locals before driving in between the mountains to the hidden gem of Saksun, the village looks like a scene taken out of the Lord of the Rings. This remote hillside village lies on the shores of a tranquil turquoise lagoon cradled by rugged fjords. The enchanting village has less than 20 inhabitants, loads of grazing sheep, grass-roof houses & a picturesque church. The drive into the village is captivating as you wind through a valley floor passing waterfalls & beautiful vistas. Our last stop is Navia Farm, offering a unique glimpse into the local way of life, blending traditional Faroese culture with a modern, sustainable twist. We head back to Torshavn for a relaxing evening   (BL)
