Arrive into Cairo & transfer to our centrally located hotel, the venue for our conference. The afternoon is at leisure until our welcome dinner (D)

After morning conference sessions & lunch, the afternoon sightseeing tour starts with a visit to the Citadel, which provides a panoramic view of Cairo.  The Citadel dominates Cairo’s skyline & was the centre of the city & Egypt for almost 700 years. The Mohammed Ali Mosque is built within the Citadel walls & inside you’ll see a beautifully painted roof & the Tomb of Mohammad Ali, a ruler of Egypt. We continue to the Khan El Khalili Bazaar, where some free time will be given to wander through the bazaar & try your hand at bartering for Egyptian souvenirs (BL)

 

  

 

 

SUN  29

 

Today will be your first glimpse of the Pyramids & Sphinx on our full day tour. The day starts with a visit of the newly constructed Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest museum in the world, housing over 100,000 artifacts from ancient Egyptian civilization, including Tutankhamen treasures which you'll be viewing. The first object you see when entering the museum is the huge statue of Ramses the 2nd, which the museum was built around. Our guide will show you the most important pieces on display before some free time to wander on your own. After an included lunch, the afternoon is spent at Giza being mesmerized by the Pyramids & Sphinx (built 2600-2500 BC). The Pyramids have survived the rise & fall of great dynasties & share the surrounds with the Sphinx - who has the head of a Pharaoh with a Lion’s body - and a number of smaller pyramids & temples (BL)

 

 

 

MON 30

 

Morning conference sessions & lunch, then an afternoon tour to Coptic Cairo, the oldest part of Cairo. Some Egyptologists believe that there was a settlement here as far back as the 6th century BC. Romans built a fortress here & some of these Roman walls still exist. Later, it became a Christian

stronghold, with as many as 20 Christian churches but now only a few remain. We'll visit the Saints Sergius & Bacchus Church (known for being the place where Joseph, Mary & infant Jesus stayed for 3 months at the end of their journey into Egypt), the Hanging Church & the oldest synagogue in Egypt. We'll also visit the National Museum Of Egyptian Civilisation, which houses 12 Royal mummies incl. Ramses 2 & Hatshepsut (BL) 

 

  

 

 

TUE 31

 

Conference sessions this morning followed by lunch then a visit to Saqqara, one of the richest archaelogical sites in Egypt. The centrepiece here is the Step Pyramid of Djoser - Egypt's oldest pyramid - built some 4,700 years ago. It’s 62 meters high & marked the beginning of a new method of burial tomb construction. You'll be able to walk inside the pyramid to view the burial chamber of King Djoser. We'll also visit the interiors of the Teti Pyramid with it's well-preserved giant basalt sarcophagus & the Tomb of Mereruka to see magnificent wall paintings & his life size statue. Tonight enjoy a special gala dinner (BLD)
